  • Madonna wears Taiwan flag during Taipei concert bringing focus to country's independence - TomoNews

TAIPEI — Madonna, who's pretty much the godmother of pop stars wearing controversial outfits, has done it again. She rocked a concert in Taipei Thursday night, draped in a Taiwanese flag. Some might say, so what? Who care's if she wears a country's flag during a concert? China cares. That's who. The Taiwanese flag is a symbol of independence for the Taiwanese people and waving it around is like a little F U to the communists on the other side of the Taiwan-strait who think the democratic island is part of China. Madonna even added a photo on Instagram featuring a symbol that's more than familiar in Taiwan. The problem is that the symbol she added is not Taiwan or Taipei's symbol. While in Taiwan, I decided to ride the THSR (HSR) for no other reason than to see what sustained 186 mph (300 km/h) feels like across land. For those in Taiwan and other countries with high speed rail this may not sound exciting. However for those of us in countries where rail speeds top out at 70 mph the thought of going NASCAR or Indy straightaway speeds seemed appealing and it was. My original plan was to ride from Taipei to Hsinchu and back. This would get me to top speed and only required about an hour out of my day. Well, I got to Hsinchu and had to keep going. With some assistance, I traded in my return ticket to go all the way to Zuoying Station and back to Taipei. The trip south was amazing, a great way to get a quick taste of the country. Without getting off the train the whole ...

We'll give Madonna the benefit of the doubt and not call her out too much on the symbol mix up. It's still pretty awesome she rocked the flag. And we doubt the diva will be apologizing anytime soon like Taiwanese-born K-pop star Chou Tzu-yu was forced to do. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Mandarin/Eng/Nat The head of a Vatican aid agency began a week long visit to Taiwan amid rumors that the Holy see may break formal diplomatic ties with Taipei and recognize China. Archbishop Paul Josef Cordes dispelled the rumours and assured the Taiwanese the bilateral relationship was still strong. Archbishop Paul Josef Cordes began his tour of Taiwan last week amid rumors that the Vatican was planning to establish diplomatic relations with China. Taiwan president Lee Ten-hui awarded a medal of honor to the head of a Vatican aid agency on Sunday. In recent months, Taiwanese and Hong Kong media have reported that Vatican is on the verge of severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China. Cordes said his visit was a sign that the Taiwan-Vatican relationship was still strong. SOUNDBITE : (English) \"People perhaps are afraid that the relationship with Vatican could be recant, but this is by no means. Churches are faithful, and holy fathers very much relate to people and solve their difficulties. You should not be afraid of the future.\" SUPERCAPTION : Archbishop Paul Josef Cordes, President of The Pontifical Council 'cor unum' Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949, and the Communists who rule the mainland consider this island to be a breakaway province undeserving of diplomatic recognition. SOUNDBITE : (Mandarin) \"The Republic of China and Vatican will maintain a good relationship in the future. Because we have the same purpose in the supporting of human rights and freedom of religion. In these bases, I believe our relationship will maintain very stable.\" SUPER CAPTION : Chen Min-jen, MOFA spokesman China has demanded the Vatican break its Taiwan ties if it intends to renew normal relations with the Beijing government. China and the Vatican broke formal relations in 1951, when the Communists kicked out missionaries and forced Catholics to sever ties with Rome. Taiwan has warned the Vatican that it must not ignore China's repression of Roman Catholics on the mainland. SOUNDBITE : (Mandarin) \"Rome has made clear their attitude that they will never give up Taiwan. Even if the Vatican establishes a relationship with China someday, they definitely will keep an embassy here.\" SUPERCAPTION : John Baptist Wu, General secretary of Chinese bishop conference Two weeks ago, China strained its relations with Rome even further by ordaining five new bishops without Vatican approval. China's officially sanctioned church does not recognize papal authority including the right to appoint bishops. The Vatican's missionary news service called China's ordination of the bishops a failed political gesture, saying scores of seminarians boycotted the ceremony in open defiance of Beijing. So Bravofly is a booking site. Long story short, they didn't include the bag I paid for so I was forced to pay the premium price at the airport. Oh well, I arrived safely in Taipei. My 88th Country. And what a night it turned out to be. This video covers my arrival. Without getting off the train the whole trip is about an hour and a half. I recommend starting in the morning and making a day out of the round trip adventure. Stop at a few stations and check out the area, the trains come every 20 minutes, not much time is lost if you miss one. When you get to Zouying Station take some time, walk around, bypass McDonald's and venture to the Shinkong Mitsukoshi Mall, nearby. Browse, lookout over the Zouying station, grab a bite to eat and get back to the train for the return trip. My only recommendation is to not travel at night. There is really nothing to see in the dark, fine for the 130,000 people who ride this everyday but if it's a once in a lifetime trip do it when you can see out the window.
